Community engagement

This page outlines my performance and accomplishments in terms of organisational sustainability in my role as a full-time lecturer in Information and Communication Technology at Macquarie University’s Department of Education.

  • Applied for and was awarded a $40K MUETG grant on “Improving accessibility and participation using web-conferencing”.
  • Applied for and was awarded a $20K MUETG grant on “A video reflection system for developing education students’ communication capabilities”.
  • Applied for and was awarded a $20K MUETG grant to trial a web-conferencing system to enable higher degree research students to effectively collaborate remotely with their supervisors and other departments across the university to remotely interact with their students. This has grown into managing a web-conferencing trial for the university, which is important to develop Macquarie’s online and distance teaching capabilities.
  • Installed a research wiki for the School of Education and provide professional development and documentation to support its implementation.
  • Managing the School of Education Moodle Learning Management System for staff and students that houses the subjects ACES 831, ACES815, ACES861, ACES865, EDUC261, and Teaching Beginning Reading. (This is important not only for the department but also for the university in terms of evaluating Moodle as an alternative Learning Management System once the university Blackboard licence expires at the end of this year).
  • Submitted and was successfully awarded a Teaching Infrastructure grant worth approximately $80,000 for the Department of Education to update our technology infrastructure including a set of new laptops for the department.
  • Working on the development of new ICT program partnerships with the ICT Innovation Centre so that people can work on innovative ICT projects at the same time as they earn postgraduate qualifications (also working on the production of marketing materials to publicise this initiative in conjunction with Norman McCulla, Laurie Field and Michael Cavanagh)
  • Created an Education Higher Degree Research Online Collaboration site in conjunction with David Saltmarsh and Margaret Fegent (all students have been enrolled onto the site which enables supervisors to post relevant information relating to research training, academic writing, HDR documentation etc, at the same time as it allows postgraduate students to collaborate with one another using chat and discussion boards, create blogs, contribute to a collaborative wiki, and so on).
  • Created a community-based repository of online teaching and learning resources (using Diigo) and providing ongoing management of that community.
  • Offered professional development workshops for other staff in the use of wikis (Aug08), social bookmarking (Feb09), Wordpress e-portfolios (Feb09, Feb10), Moodle (Feb09), LAMS (Feb09), web-conferencing (Dec08, Jan 09), teaching and learning using Web2.o (Jul09), Spreadsheets (Feb10), Interactive Whiteboards (Feb10).
  • Providing ongoing teaching and learning research innovation and development (in an attempt to benefit the Department and University), for instance, processes for the creation of online multimedia lectures such as that at http://www.edumotive.com/mbower/educ261/HedbergGamesPres/ .
  • Offer incidental and ongoing technology support to most members of staff in the School of Education.
  • Ran voluntary workshops for students on effective communication skills for EDUC261 students in Semester 1 of 2008 and all Education students in Semester 1 of 2009.

  • Helped organise (S2 08) and then ran (S2 09) the Department of Education Colloquium Series to support professional development and research collaboration within the department.
  • Presented session at the Department of Education 2009 Colloquium entitled “Technology-based learning research: frameworks and opportunities”
  • Developed Master of Education (ICT study pattern) marketing and collaboration strategy between the Department of Education, Macquarie ICT Innovations Centre and Macquarie E Learning Centre of Excellence that provided opportunities for students to complete research projects with these centres.
  • Presented at the 2009 National Interactive Whiteboard Conference on the topic “Interactive Whiteboard potentials and constraints - applying educational research findings to optimise the effectiveness of Interactive Whiteboards” as a way of staying abreast of Interact Whiteboard practice in schools and promoting the Macquarie Program (August 09).
  • Presented at the NSW Computing Education Group Annual Conference on the topic “Web2.0 based learning design” (Sept 09)
  • Presented at the Computer Studies Teachers Association October symposium on the topic “Computer Science Education - a review” (October 09)
  • Played an information technology consultative role in a cooperative gifted and talented development project between Pennant Hills High School and Macquarie University.
  • Applied for and was awarded an 80K Macquarie University Teaching Infrastructure grant to improve the computing facilities in the Department of Education Teacher Education Labs.
  • A vocal and active member of the Faculty of Human Sciences Technology Committee.
  • Ran interactive workshops (November 09) for visiting high school classes to enthuse them about the virtues of becoming a teacher as part of the Macquarie University On-Campus Activity Program.
  • Faculty representative on the MU Learning and Teaching Spaces Committee
  • Leader of the ICT Innovation Research Group seminar series  at the Macquarie ICT Innovations Centre in order to develop the research capabilities of their project leaders and forge connections between the University and the Centre
  • Invited by the Executive Dean HS to represent the Faculty on the Blackboard Operational Reference Group.
  • Applied for and was awarded a $20K MUETG grant to extend and refine the “Improving accessibility and participation using web-conferencing” project.
  • Volunteer participant in the Spectrum mentorship project
  • A member of the Macquarie ICT Innovation Centre Reference Group Committee
  • ICT Leader for a collaboration between Epping Boys High School and Asquith Boys High School as part of Centre of Excellence Boys Literacy project.
  • Co-convenor of the Macquarie ICT Academic Series discussions.
